A Guide to Losing Weight Naturally

The motivation to lose weight varies from one person to another. You may want to lose weight for reasons of self-esteem and image, to make yourself look and feel better, or you may want to lose weight primarily for health reasons. Being overweight can make you feel lethargic, short of breath and can even lead to more serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. It can also lead to a lack of self-esteem and unhappiness within yourself.

The aim of this guide is to offer a quick guide to help you get started if you want to lose weight.

Causes of excess weight and obesity

People tend to put on weight when their energy intake (food) exceeds their energy output (e.g. exercise). The excess energy is converted to fat.

Our modern busy lives mean we tend to eat more snacks and convenience-type foods, which are often high in calories and/or fat and lower in nutritional value than traditional meals. We are also leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles; we tend to drive everywhere instead of walking, so that most of us do little natural exercise as part of our daily life.

These factors have contributed to an increase in the number of people who are overweight in recent years. In fact 60% of men and over 50% of women in the UK are considered overweight.1

Exercise….exercise….exercise

Ideally, when you are trying to lose weight, sensible daily exercise should be incorporated into your weight-loss plan. As well as helping you get into shape, you'll find the long-term health benefits enormous. One of the best ways to exercise is to walk briskly at a steady pace for about half an hour, each day.

Healthy Eating

Many people put on weight because they are not eating a healthy diet. In order to lose weight and keep it off, it is important to eat a healthy, balanced diet regularly. The following tips can help you achieve this:

Body Mass Index

The official way to determine if someone is overweight is to measure their Body Mass Index (BMI). This is determined by dividing your weight (in pounds) by your height (in inches) squared and multiplying by 703.
(BMI = Weight (lbs) / Height (inches) ² x 703).

To check your BMI, mark your weight and height on the chart below. Using the scale below it, you can determine which category you fall into. Of course, this is only a very rough guide, and should not be taken too literally, as your body-shape and build also play a part.

Your Metabolic Rate

Whilst the combination of excess calorie intake and insufficient exercise is the most common cause of excess weight, your metabolic rate, the rate at which your body converts foods (fat) into energy, can also be a factor in weight gain, and therefore in weight loss too.

Metabolic rates can vary significantly between individuals, and slow naturally with age. A slower metabolic rate may mean you naturally store more of the fats you consume, which can reduce the effectiveness of dieting. This can impact on your individual motivation and your long-term commitment to your weight loss plan.
