NOVAMOL PROTECT™

Emollient with fire retardance properties

Product overview

An innovative emollient with fire retardance properties to avoid the fire risk associated with oil-based emollients.

Novamol Protect has fire retardance properties – it doesn’t make clothing and bedding burn more readily.1-3 Suitable for adults and the elderly, Novamol Protect is ideal for patients with restricted mobility or those who may be at increased fire risk.

Proven 24-hour hydration4,5 to reduce the need for frequent reapplication throughout the day – making it easier for patients to follow an effective treatment regime and saving time for caregivers.

88% said Novamol Protect provided long-lasting itch relief, in a user evaluation study of 107 older male and female subjects with dry and itchy skin and a history of eczema, psoriasis, elderly pruritus, xeroderma, dermatitis or other dry itchy skin conditions.6

Novamol Protect is an easy to apply free-flowing gel formulated with a special combination of humectants including urea, glycerin and ethylhexylglycerin and a film-forming agent, PVP (povidone), to provide effective 24-hour hydration of the skin without the need for oils.

Novamol Protect is a highly hydrating and protective emollient for dry skin which may also be itchy. Also suitable for skin prone to eczema and dermatitis.

FIRE RETARDANCE PROPERTIES

Standard emollients can increase the risk of fire, but Novamol Protect’s fire retardance properties mean that it doesn’t make clothing and bedding burn more readily.
This specially formulated emollient can provide significant added protection for users. Clothing and bedding with Novamol Protect dried on them:

  • should not be at increased risk of ignition from exposure to cigarettes, matches, or lighters
  • do not burn more readily when exposed to indirect flames, moderate heat or even
high-energy flames, than fabrics without emollient.

Any protective effect against the risk of fire may be reduced if Novamol Protect is used with other skin products. For optimal safety, always practice responsible behaviour. If smoking is unavoidable, do not smoke near flammable materials and always handle heat and flame sources with care.

FIRE RETARDANCE EVIDENCE1

100% cotton pyjamas were treated with a widely used emollient cream or Novamol Protect 4 times over 2 days.

They were allowed to dry for 2 days, then exposed to a gas lighter for 1 second.

Other fabrics also tested were 100% cotton bedsheets, polyester, rayon, acetate and linen/cotton blend fabrics.

All fabrics treated with the widely used emollient cream ignited easily and burned completely. The flame spread quickly and was larger, more vigorous and more ferocious than the control.

All tested fabrics treated with Novamol Protect did not ignite at all after being exposed to the gas lighter 5 times.

24-HOUR HYDRATION4,5

Novamol Protect has been shown to provide 24-hour hydration following a single application, when tested in vivo.4 In the study, Novamol Protect was applied once, to the lower leg of 20 subjects.

Novamol Protect has been shown to be more than 3 times as hydrating as UIRC and more than 2 times as hydrating as BPC when tested ex vivo.5

BPC = Balneum Plus Cream. Balneum Plus is a registered trademark of Almirall Hermal GmbH.
